Hon. Joseph W.N. Nyagah was born in 1948 in Embu, Kenya and is the Minister for Co-operative Development and Marketing in the Government of Kenya. Hon. Nyagah has worked extensively in the corporate and private sectors having begun his career as a banker with the First National Bank of Chicago (now part of JP Morgan Chase) in Chicago, London and Nairobi. Hon. Nyagah was also the Kenyan Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg based in Brussels before taking over as the Chief Executive of the national carrier, Kenya Airways. A position he held for three and half years. During this period he also served as President of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in Geneva and as the Acting Secretary-General of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA). He has been involved in a number of private businesses including a private cargo airline and trading and owned a successful maize milling business. A holder of a BA (honors) degree (Economics and Political Science) from the University of Nairobi and an MBA from Kellogg Business School Northwestern University, Chicago, Hon, Nyagah is the eldest son of the late Jeremiah Nyagah, a well respected politician and long serving minister in the Government of Kenya as well as being a major player in Kenyan's Independence.
Having followed his father into politics in 1998, Nyagah has served the Government in several areas including Information and Broadcasting, Lands and Settlement and Public Service as Minister and East African Community and Agriculture as an Assistant Minister. He was the Member of Parliament for Gachoka from 1998 to 2007, and is currently a Nominated Member of Parliament. Nyagah has played a key role in the peace process for Somalia and led the first delegation to Mogadishu in fourteen years. Hon, Nyagah is a keen advocate of Kenyans at the grass root level and with his current position is able to implement policy aimed at fighting poverty through farmer production and marketing co-operatives; rural urban savings and credit societies (SACCO), transport co-operatives, amongst others.
Nyagah is a father of two, and a grandfather to two boys. He is an avid reader and enjoys writing.
